AOIF revisits Oz in “Behind the Moon, Beyond the Rain.”
The Arts of Imagination Foundation and ESMoA have partnered to bring “Behind the Moon, Beyond the Rain,” a new art exhibit to the Richstone Family Center in Hawthorne, California.
As we travel through life’s adventures, inevitably we are confronted with things and individuals that are foreign to what we know. Looking at how characters in timeless stories react in these situations can help us consider and strengthen our own emotional responses.
“Behind the Moon, Beyond the Rain” invites us to revisit the legendary world of Oz, where the unknown can be both whimsical and uncertain. Pairing a 1940 drawing by John R. Neill for the original Wizard of Oz book series with an illustration by contemporary Los Angeles based artist,
Carlos “Kopyeson” Talavera, and a photograph by German artists, Amely Spoetzl and Bernd Zoellner, this exhibit encourages us to discover our personal perspectives on our shared yellow brick road journeys.
About the project
The Arts of Imagination Foundation (AOIF) and ESMoA are collaborating to create and present, in community organization settings, events that uniquely pair different story-inspired artworks for conversations about how our relationship with timeless stories can help us see artwork and each other differently. This collaboration will draw upon artworks in the AOIF permanent collections and private collection loans, with new pieces created by commission that uniquely tie together conceptual ideas.
Since 1974, the Richstone Family Center has been dedicated to treating and preventing child abuse and trauma; strengthening and educating families; and preventing violence in families, schools, and communities.
Da Vinci RISE High seeks to create a highly responsive, holistic, and integrated model that meets the unique needs of youth navigating foster care, housing instability, probation, and/or other circumstances that have caused disruptions in their academic journeys. Through the facilitation of a flex-scheduling, credit recovery model, students are given the voice and choice necessary to pursue their academic goals while honoring the additional responsibilities they have in their lives.
